In Bario

Hi all- Megan blogging again

We flew into Bario yesterday. Everyone was really tired, as we had to wake up at 5.30 to have breakfast and catch our flight. We flew in this really tiny plane, which was a new experience for most of us. The view was pretty incredible,  though we slept through a lot of it.

One we landed, we walked to Nancy’s place- where we are to stay throughout the project phase. She is extremely friendly and very welcoming. We had lunch there- rice, vegetables and prawns- although four of us had chicken instead of the prawns. Nancy got us to sample some durian ( a foul smelling, though supposedly tasty fruit). It wasn’t received too well- you see, she mixed it with fish. Becky ran out of the room at the taste, and I wasn’t too keen on trying it after that.

There wasn’t much to do that day, so a few of us took a nap. Apparently we were sleeping too deeply for us to be waken for some pancakes- they were very good I’m told. We later walked down the muddy paths to check out Bario Primary School. We saw the work done by a previous English school- so we got a good idea of what was expected of us. Everyone was very determined to beat the ‘Poms.’

We had a debrief at the end of the day, everything went well and new roles for the next day were assigned. I am leader for the day- and I don’t think I’m too good at it. We finished the night off with  dinner, then some cards.

Today- we woke up at 7.30 and had breakfast. Noodles and friend egg, and some milo. After we had packed our daypacks we headed down to the primary school. There were different sections for each of us to work in. Ripping up old planks, sawing new ones, getting nails out etc. Everyones working really well, and we’re getting a lot done.

Currently Georgia, Alex and I are using the Bario computers, we have to find a hymm for Sunday at Church. Thanks for all of your comments, and suggestions for songs to perform. I think we’re doing silent night.

KK, gotta go, blog whenever we can.

Good job Becky, Nice to see your expanding your culinary horizons. Sounds like your having a fantastic time though. Everyone here is really missing you. The girls are planning a huge christmas when you get home, real tree, the works. Have you hung up the Aussie flag yet? Want to make sure the next group knows that all the great work was done by the Aussies. Make sure you take heaps of photos. Most of us are struggling to imagine what all this must look like, so help us out. The dogs are all getting clipped tomorrow, but were not letting on or they’ll all hide under the house. Get on the internet and let us know how your doing. Love you and miss you, oh great intrepid explorer. Oh, BTW, does anyone know your nickname yet – Bindy. XXXXX Mum

Hi David, just logged on to see what new adventures had been posted. The work at he primary school sounds interesting, are you building a new walkway or is more like repair work? How’s the food going, are you being adventurous or sticking to the basics, did you try the horrible smelling fruit? Are you sleeping in your hammocks while you do the project or in accomodation?
It sounds like you all got a good rest the day you arrived in Bario, was the flight wierd in the little plan or scary! Everyone here is fine, just the usual, 8 sessions of soccer each week for Anthony, Thomas is currently doing swimming lessons with school, Emily is hanging out for high school musical 3, I am flat out at work and Dad has had to go up to Balmoral to finish the house for the new people to move in. Hey Becky, Haven’t heard from you for ages. How about an email or blog, just so we know your ok. Hannah’s getting a bit twitchy. The dogs are all bald now and fortunately they all smell a bit better as well, except for Stink of course. Glenn and Jayden came over again on the weekend and had a look at the blogs. Bit disappointed that you hadn’t got on and told us what your up to, so better get too it. Jayden thinks your a weiner of course, but what do you expect. Hannie wants to know what you think of your book. She’s counting down all the days till you get back, on the fridge like we did before you left. Hoping the jungle trek went well and you didn’t come across to many giant spiders and bats, or whatever they have there. We don’t know, cos you won’t get on and blog and tell us!!!. Ok, think I’ve banged on about blogging and emailing us enough, so get to the keyboard and we’ll hear from you soon. Love Mum and all the little clarkes!!

    Auntie Kathy:

    Hey Twins

I have been wondering about your trip and looking forward to reading about your thoughts and experiences. Are you used to the climate now? Is it getting easier to work for longer? Where do you eat lunch? What do you do in your free time? And most importantly — Have you seen oranguatangs living in the wild?

I have realised that you must be close to halfway through your trip, please make sure that you take lots photos.

Grandad was looking well when I left NZ last week. Rach is in Sorrento.

    Thinking of you

Hey, Mr Anderton here. I wish I could be there with you all, it seems like you’re having a fantastic time. The food sounds like it’s delicious, especially the prawns. Yummy! The school is so quiet at the moment with only years 7, 8 and 9. There’s not much in the way of news, but we’re all thinking of ya. Be safe and we’ll see you in ‘09. Take care.

Hello everyone, sounds like you guys are having a ball! Dylan I’ve finally managed to work out how to get on to this site so sorry for the delay in sending you a message. Technology is wonderful when it all works. By the time you get this I would imagine you would have done the village project and managed the jungle. No little surprises along the way I hope, no adopting any Orangatanges. I read they stole your breakfast they obviously know how important it is to eat breakfast – ha ha. All is well at home and we miss you very much. Adrian started his new job and has been flat out, Alex got into the netball grandfinal, Pat went to fill in for cricket for you but they got washed out again. Animals are all doing well, Russel’s been in a few fights so a bit scarred, jack’s being his normal sookie self. I can’t wait to see the photos and hear all about your experiences. We love you!!
